For over 25 years David has helped clients establish strong IP positions, with regard both to building valuable IP portfolios and navigating third-party IP rights. Much of his work has concentrated on computer-implemented technologies such as Fintech, artificial intelligence, distributed ledgers and data security. Recently, David has been increasingly involved in protecting innovation in quantum technologies, and he has a particular interest in patenting inventions in the fields of quantum computing and quantum communication.
Through his work with computer-implemented technologies and quantum technologies, David recognises the benefits of collaborative innovation and tailors IP strategies that complement, rather than frustrate, such collaborative innovation. This frequently involves advising on which technologies to make open, e.g. through open-source licensing of computer code, and which technologies to make proprietary, e,g, through patenting or keeping confidential.
Holding a doctorate in Physics from the Optoelectronics Research Centre at Southampton University, David maintains an interest in optical and optoelectronic technologies. In addition to working extensively in the field of display technologies, David has handled inventions concerning optical communications, laser devices, optical modulators, solar cells and terahertz spectroscopy.
David is frequently involved in contentious matters. At the European Patent Office, David has extensive experience of the opposition procedure up to and including presenting oral arguments before Technical Boards of Appeal. David particularly relishes the challenge of defending patents under opposition. David is also well placed to advise clients on the Unified Patent Court (UPC).
