Sunny Bansal

Sunny works in the field of IT and engineering, with particular emphasis on telecommunications and software technologies. Sunny has in-depth knowledge of 3GPP telecommunications standards and works closely with the legal team providing support on standard essential patent litigation matters. Sunny is well placed to advise clients on the new Unified Patent Court (UPC) - see further details at EIP Amar, our alliance created to support clients in any litigation before the UPC.

Sunny’s work is mainly focused on the contentious side, and he has extensive experience of acting in large scale UK patent litigation and in multi-jurisdictional patent litigation including the UK, US, China and Germany. Sunny has advised and represented clients in post-grant enforcement against competitors and defended granted patents against invalidity actions. This includes opposition proceedings before the European Patent Office and proceedings before the UK High Court.

Before training as a patent attorney Sunny worked as an IP researcher, and has developed unique and highly effective strategies for finding prior art. Sunny is regularly sought for his expertise in IP research by clients faced with an enforcement action.

Sunny holds a first class Engineering degree in Computer Networks and a PhD in IP-based Wireless Networks from Middlesex University, and has previously been involved in the European Union “Broadband Radio Access for IP based Networks” project whilst working at BT’s R&D department.

Recent work

  • Providing pre-action and ongoing technical support in relation to validity and infringement of certain standard essential patents as part of representing Conversant Wireless in its successful Supreme Court proceedings against Huawei and ZTE.
  • Unwired Planet vs. Samsung, Huawei and LG Electronics (Düsseldorf District Court). Acted for patent owner in providing technical support to EIP Legal team in Germany in standard essential patent case related to LTE and GSM standards.
  • Unwired Planet vs. Samsung and Huawei (UK High Court). Acted for patent owner in providing technical support in 4G standard essential patent case.
